My suggestion would be to go for the Hardrock Sport Disc. As said above this are not all that big, but big enough for a beginner. For this riding you want a good strong frame, and although the frames are similar between the Hardrock and Rockhopper the Hardrock has a stronger rear triangle. The components are not as good but these can be later upgraded. The reason I suggest the Disc Sport is that it already has all the disc brake mounts and would be easier to upgrade the brakes.
I like mtnbiker66 suggestion about the P. Series of bike from Specialized, have you looked at them ?
PS take on the suggestion of gaurds and a decent helmet, lets not learn the hard way.
