It makes me wonder if any enterprising local could offer a bicycle ferry service around the bridge. There are a few coves along the coast where the waves aren't as bad, but then you have to see how hard it would be to get the bikes up to the road.
Maybe the unemployed locals who are allowed to use the new trail could act as sherpas, and carry you and your bike and gear to the other side. I'd pay $100 just for the experience.
