Coroplast was my thought as well. There are still election signs littering some of the roads around here. I would cut rectangular panels, punch holes in the edges/corners and ziptie them to the basket.
For $1 you probably shouldn't worry about durability, but dabac is right, if you want it to be sturdy, you might consider affixing it to a plywood platform on the bottom.
