I do take the precaution of sleeping with my handlebar bag up near my head and no where near the door in the unlikely event someone will try and reach through the door at night.
Do the same at the hostel. I usually get a private room but if I have to use the dorm, I try to pick a bunk next to a wall. Place the bag near my head between me and the wall.
