Any pedals will work on any bike. Yes, some pedals were originally designed for mtb because the small cleats could be recessed. I have seen many people with regular SPD pedals on road bikes, and I have Egg Beaters on 4 road bikes. I like Egg Beaters so much I cannot imaging using anything else. Their design and construction is about as simple as a clipless pedal can be, with very few parts. They are very easy to service. My favorite thing about them is that you can clip into any of the four sides so you never, ever have to even THINK about which side is up. Clicking in is so easy it sometimes happens without my even realizing it.

Looks are good pedals, certainly better than Wellgo. I used then for quite a while and was very happy with them. Then I tried Egg Beaters and immediately started changing the pedals on all of my bikes over the next 2-3 months.
