Its a fine idea assuming the wider cross tires will fit in your Pacer. Try putting a wheel w/a cross tire in the frame - does it clear the brake bridge, fork crown, and chainstays?
Adding cantilever brazons and re-spacing the rear triangle is relativley quick and easy work.
