One trail break near DC, at Widewater Basin, south of Great Falls. IMO the prettiest spot on the whole canal. The north end of the basin is about a quarter mile of rocks. Hikeable but not bikeable. There is a detour trail along the ridge overlooking the basin.
Another break in Georgetown where you have to walk your bike over a footbridge.
