I'd go with steel over aluminum on account of strength but others would say it matters not.

If the frame has a lifetime warranty as I've heard Trek offers, get aluminum and jump off tall buildings with impunity. I'd hesitate to buy an aluminum bike if it didn't have a lifetime warranty though.
