The majority of cyclists don't wear special outfits. Sure, most of them don't go on 20 or 50 mile training rides, but probably plenty of people commute on beaters 10 or 15 miles each way every day in ordinary underwear. I only have a five mile (each way) commute and I never wear bike shorts for that, and if I happen to do errands after work and end up riding 10-15 miles I never have a problem. I do wear bike shorts for longer recreational weekend rides.
