Well here we don't get tropical downpours but we do get cold steady rains that can last for days or even weeks. I don't like it, never will, and when it happens I cut my time on the bike by half and just make the required trips. Another possible solution is fenders on the bike--at least your bottom half doesn't get quite as wet.

I like your point about not thinking, just saddle up and go. Sometimes the ride you were dreading turns out to be an all-time favorite.
