I think the major etiquette issue is that you don't show up to a race with world champ stripes - so that when a world champ actually shoes up they get a little recognition and respect. I've ridden with a couple of people who hold or have held the title, and I would have been made the fool if I happened to be wearing my wool-world champs jersey that day... get the picture? Kind of the same concept as the fred's who wear full Discovery-team kits to a cat-5 race.
