I agree that shipping the bike might be simplest. I don't know about your locale, but I found shipping a large package (an armchair) by Greyhound was cheaper than the postal service or UPS/Fedex etc. a couple of years ago.

For the car, a trailer-hitch rack is the best option, if you intend to keep using it. You can get a hitch mount fairly cheaply attached to the car by U-Haul or their agent (after all, the more cars with hitches, the better for their trailer business), and I understand there are even some do-it-yourself hitch attachments. Get a rack that swings down or to the side to allow access to the rear hatch.
