I've done a few commutes out to Bloor and Hurontario from Yonge and Eglinton. I've tried mapping out the most direct route (as close to as the crow flies) and found the constant turning to slow me down. Stop signs on side streets aren't always faster than the potential of having to stop at a traffic light on a major street. I ended up taking side streets to Keele and Eg. then Eg. all the way to Kipling and head south then go west on either Burnhamthorpe or Bloor til I hit Hurontario. When you go along those major routes the traffic lights are timed to keep traffic moving.
