Road to becoming a Pro Mechanic

I know there are must be many ways of doing this. I have checked out course offerings at UBI and BBI, and I imagine that it would be very difficult to pass the final certification exam and the end of the courses without prior shop experience. Would the lesser certificate of completion still be a good way to get one's feet wet and land a job, or is it better to just try and begin working as an apprentice?
