Cycling Shoe Size Question.

I live in America, so naturally, we don't do metric. I wear a size 12 shoe & I'm thinking about buying a new pair. I believe the pair that I have now is 46 or 46.5. So after some research I see that 46 size shoes are normally for people with a size 13 foot. But I've also read that you want to get a shoe size that's bigger than you're actual foot. Can anyone assist me in letting me know what size shoe I should really be looking for? Thanks!
