I've lost 70-lbs in 16 months with roughly a 500 cal/day deficit. I find I end up on the weight roller-coaster if I try to lose more than this rate. And my fitness-improvement rate isn't as quick either. Probably because I'd be low on energy with too great of a deficit and that impairs recovery. And probably also because more muscle is lost at a faster rate as well.
