I can't remember who it was, but I think one of the winners in the Pyrenees this Tour was quoted on cyclingnews.com as saying he was glad he told his mechanic to fit a compact crankset for the days stage.
(But if Tiger is correct about cyclingnews.com then maybe he was paid to say that
