I've found its the tire that matters more than the tube. If you have a good tire and keep the tube properly inflated you shouldn't have any problems with flats, pinch or puncture.

My route is littered with hazards like glass, contruction debris and bad roads. I still use my road tires 700x23 and haven't had a flat in close to 1k miles. I also have the bontrager racelite hardcase tires. The tubes are the standard bontrager tubes. I've pulled chunks of glass and staples out of the tire that had been there for who knows how long and they didn't make it through to the tube.
