Converting old rigid MTB to front susp

My old MTB is pre-suspension era. It's time to replace the headset and as long as I'm doing that, I thought I'd look at also changing to a suspension fork. Has anyone done this? Any issues? What happens to the handling when raising the front end?

Also, the current headset/fork/headtube is JIS. Would I be able to fit 30.2mm ISO headset cups into my 30.0mm headtube? (I'm assuming any new susp fork will be ISO).
