hydrogen peroxide will eliminate a lot of odors in plastic, bleach works well also. Both sterilize the bottle too.
I usually buy a bottle of powerade and refill as needed with fresh water, when it gets old and grungy buy a new bottle, the new style bottles fit the holder perfectly, snug enough to stay, but easy to pull out, problem is that they don't have the sports tops.
