I rode and exercised with inguinal hernia for close to a year before I decided to get it fixed. Doc initially told me riding, running, lifting weights were fine if I were able to live with the discomfort and the inconvinience. Eventually I got fed up with constant pushing every 5 minutes of my inerts that I decided to get it fixed once and for all. I was out for like three weeks before I was able to get back on the bike.
I have a running buddy that is just now recovering from surgery for a hernia. His doctor told him the very same thing as Fixer's; running, riding were fine if you want to endure the discomfort. He just gritted his teeth to maintain his fitness until the operation date.
