Greetings from Lawrence, KS

Hello all!
I just moved to Lawrence, KS and started my graduate training in Psychology. Just got me a Trek 7.2FX. I really enjoy riding around town, and school (I don't park my bike - i carry it up to my office!!) In fact, i'm "training" to bike all the way to KC - via the US24/US40 route.. thru Reno, and Tonganoxie. I promised a friend i'd do it.
Just wondering what kind of training tips you guys can offer.
This afternoon I biked to Reno, and turned back. Could have pushed for Tonganoxie, but if i had done that, i'd probably have pushed for KC! - And it's my first time out on the backroads!
I realized that my lower back aches a little... i guess this will go away after some training, but i suspect it could be the geometry of the bike...could changing the seatpost improve the geometry?
Any other advice such as safety, and winter training and all that i'd really appreciate!
