reliability is a must, but there's a lot of value in a bike that you're not going to worry about getting stolen. one that you beat on hard because if something bad happens to the bike you wont lose any sleep.
i just ordered an iro rob roy, which has no bling value but it does have brake holes, canti pegs, fender and rack mounts. a bargain conversion would likely have most of the same.
