That's just the way it is. Trying to get the original thief (if you could find him) to pay for the subsequent damage to your bike is probably a dead end too. If he had any money that you could attach he probably wouldn't have to steal bikes.

So if it were a $500 bike or a $1000 bike, do you seriously think the police would have done any more investigation?
