Tuesday: just a quick lap around the city as fast as I could go for an hour.

Wednesday: late to the race ride, so I chased up and down the first hill and caught the group just as the neutral part ended. Went with the second group up the climb (let the 3 fast guys go up the road, no point in chasing). This one guy insisted on pacing us almost the whole time. I would feel it was too slow, come around, and he would speed up to lead again. Not sure what was up with that but I managed to get around and push it at the 12-15 minute mark and drop one guy before using the 2 bigger guys to help pace the flat section. Couldn't lose them until the top when I sprinted and realized they both had nothing left. Also PRed the climb at like 20 watts lower power than usual. I guess drafting a big guy helps even on a climb!

I've just started 'training' again; been riding for a few weeks but got back from a vacation to NYC / Bermuda that served as a demarcation point. I put quotes there because what I am capable of today is a pittance compared to what I could do in the past.

I definitely feel old right now.

I slammed my knee super hard on a MTB ride on Friday evening. Was camping the weekend and meant to do tons of riding. On Saturday morning it was so swollen, stiff and painful that I couldn't walk, and experienced shooting pain when I bent it or swiveled my ankle. I thought I might need to get shuttled down to the ER but luckily the symptoms got better and I was hobbling around by the evening. On Sunday morning I could even pedal a bit.

I went to the Dr.'s today just to be proactive, and he confirmed that there were no breaks or tendon damage by bending and twisting my knee a bunch. Just some bruising and swelling, which is already way down. He prescribed some light spinning for a week, after which we expect me to have a green light to resume business as usual.

Phew!!!

Thanks everyone!

I think feeling old right now is more from a few months of inactivity; or at least I hope.

15 min of spinning on the trainer
20 min of prescribed leg/knee exercises
another 15 min of spinning

I'm coming back mother****ers. I still walk with a (slight) limp, but it's mostly a gangster thing at this point

Was able to get in some decent volume last week and I'm feeling like form is coming back pretty quickly, which is nice.

Today was form sprints. They went well, though I am now kinda sore where the tear has been healing, but not in the "oh ****" kinda way that it had been, more in a scar tissue sorting itself out kinda way. Sorta assuming this is to be expected at this point.

Park ride. Didn't go for any sprints. But spent way more than my share of time in the wind even for the small group. And small group + big group speeds + lots of time either off the front, keeping gaps in check, or leading out the sprints = really hard workout.

Had a great weekend of riding. Plus getting to experience the exlipse was a life-changing experience. I would totally put up with the traffic again to do it over. For reference, it took me ~8 hours to go ~250 miles on 80mph freeways getting back home from Southern Idaho to North Utah.

Thursday I rode up two hills outside of Pocatello. Beautiful climbs, really smooth rodes and no traffic. Only had to compete with cows for road space. Finished up the drive to Jackson to spend the night in Wyoming.

Got up Friday morning and rode with @tetonrider. He won 2 of the 3 stateline sprints, so I guess it was a loss on my part . Ended up being 93 miles, 5.5 hours and 7000 feet of elevation in 3 climbs.

Decided to stick around for a bonus day in Wyoming on Saturday morning. Went out for a mtb ride with Teton and a friend. Got my ass handed to me. Need to work on my descending, really a big weakness of mine on the mtb. That ended up at ~3 hours, 23 miles and 2300 feet of elevation on a beautiful day in the mountains. Would do this ride again any day, just wish my bike was about 10 lbs lighter.

Saturday evening I headed over to a ranch in rural Idaho that some of my friends own. Sunday I got up and hit the road. Teton had recommended a big ride north of where I was at, but didn't really feel like driving to the start. So I hit the gravel roads and one big ski resort hill climb. The gravel was a little more than I had baragined for my 90 PSI, 25mm tires. Wasn't deep, but it was extremly washboarded and was tossing me around quite a bit. Rattled my headset loose, even. Which was an easy road side fix. 2.5 hours, 45 miles, 2200 feet. Probably about 15 of that on gravel.

Sunday, my friends and I rode ATV's up to the hills outside of the small town we were in to watch the eclipse. As I mentioned above, a life changing experience. Simply amazing, no words to describe it. Got in the car and hated life for 7 hours getting home. Got home, passed out and went to work this morning. Rode an easy hour on the trainer this evening and then caught up on the TV I missed while I was gone. (Anyone hating the pacing of Game of Thrones now a days?)

Sounds like decent training.

How small is small for that ride?

Its pretty good training for short intense suffering and recovering. Its a group ride so the ~3 minute leadout/sprint section isn't as high power as solo intervals would be, but the random surges here and there keep it just as hard.

I think we had around 10 riders today. Including a few stragglers who join back in at random spots when they get dropped in a sprint. Brian was there as usual, and a couple Dolce Vita riders. James often shows up but not today.

went up to vermont over the weekend to pre ride the GMSR road stage. we were with some cat 2s (and a legit pro...so what if he was on a cx bike with cx tires) so we did the p/1/2 loop. you guys are in for...some fun. rochester gap is no joke.

i felt like death all day and couldn't get out of my own way on the hills. was pretty down about it, but given how much work i put in the week before and how fatigued i was going into the ride, it makes sense. next two weeks are dedicated to tapering in the hope that my legs come around.

changed my cleats to mid-sole last Friday. rode 70mi saturday, did 2x tt on Sunday, did a noon ride yesterday. Power is the same, legs feel about the same, feet have some adapting to do. Muscle soreness in my left foot arch, both shins have mild soreness, and the very bottom my right calf is sore.

nothing I'm too worried about, but it's interesting and definitely different.

Fudgy, did you have to change your saddle height or position at all with the change in cleat position?

And how far back are your cleats? I run Speedplays, and I keep them pretty much all the way back. I feel like I get better power, but the four-bolt pattern on the shoes allows for moving the cleats back quite a bit.

I'm jealous of the P/1/2s. Adding an early gap climb to that stage should make for a lively race from the gun.

Especially with all the tired legs in the field after doing 107 miles for Stage 2.

210.5 miles and 18k of climbing over two days. Yikes!
