The low was in the 90s today, high of 115 Luckily was just doing a spin at sunrise because I'm racing this weekend. Heading up to the cooler temps for a 2 day omnium!

Was bombing along this morning towards the end of a 30' interval when my training partner and I came around a bend and found a rattlesnake sunning himself in the path. It actually coiled up at us. My buddy went left and I went right and luckily the snake didn't get either of us. We kind of softpedaled the rest of the way to the turnaround after that.

Essentially taking 3 days off the bike to get better, then will probably need to ride easy for a week. Its frustrating from a racing perspective, but even more from a local perspective. You finally build up and get some nods from the elitists in the local rides, than drop down a few notches only to be at the back of the pack again. Still have confidence I can get a win, I've raced well on poor form and I can get great form. The problem is I have to walk a meticulous tightrope and one slip up and there it goes.

hey at least you live somewhere that still has races!
def. frustrating tho; but in the long run a few days or a week isn't the end of your career.

As a protocol, I should chug a liter of water in the morning to prevent these incidents; had I drank enough prior to that hour long climb in 90+ heat I would have been fine. Training in the heat is pretty much a requirement, even if you wake early.
Sometimes I'll write stuff down to vent and then delete it, I try to avoid inviting others to my pity parties...

Naw, just drink more water in general. Pounding it like that just means you'll pee most of it out and flush some electrolytes from your body.

Yesterday: off the bike (traveling)
Today: 1hr 45min of nice spinning on Lifecycle GX (spin bike?) in hotel. It was very comfy; I could have ridden it forever.

I'm 70% committed to taking my bike to seattle and bike down the PNW coast
I could come back 3-4 weeks later, recover, and kick ass at the state road race

4 hours today with some spirited punchy hills in the first hour and 10-12 sprint efforts throughout the rest. definitely underestimated how much the sprint efforts would take out of me.
also reminded myself of the golden rule of flats...unless you pinch flat or the tube failed 90% of the time a flat is because of a cut in the tire so unless you boot it or change the tire you're just going to flat again. thankfully the good ol' dollar bill tire boot got me home.
honestly i'd be inclined to say that 3-4 weeks of long touring miles is probably not going to do a very good job of prepping you for a road race

Team ride this morning on cross bikes. I suck at cross racing but riding bikes really fast on gravel and dirt is super fun. A bunch of 3-6 minute vo2max climbs with the excellent motivation of my teammate always trying to drop me. And it's always fun to sprint in 40x11.

Pro/Open XC race on Tuesday, minimum elevation 8,000ft. 9th/17. Felt like absolute garbage. Couldn't produce power. Guys were riding away from me that had no business doing so.
The following day, had hot/cold flashes, didn't eat much at all. Felt better towards the evening. The next day, rode the rollers in the garage, felt great. Decided to do some intervals. Good power. Normally I feel stiff and slow the day after an off day, doubly so when I've been ill.
Very strange week.

Planned 2x45 tempo last night. Didn't figure on severe t-storms. I managed to dodge the storms through the first 45', ran out of room early in the second. With a big storm between me and home I ended up having to call in a rescue and ducked into a cafe. I didn't actually ride in much rain, and that wasn't my biggest concern. The amount of lightning I was seeing between me and my house was very scary.
This morning, a big team cross practice. Lots of barrier work, 10x30" grass hill repeats, another 10 run-up repeats. So humid. So brutal. Cyclocross training in mid-August is just brutal thanks to the heat. Worth it, though.
