It looks like it's back into the 40's next week, so this is basically just a reminder that those of us in the north east are super lucky this winter.

2x13 (was only going to do 12...funny how you lose count on these things) 30/30 vo2, followed by 20 minutes of tempo. 30/30 sucks when its the first time doing it for the year.
Didnt feel like doing a steady state workout tonight. So I did this. Havent felt like puking on the bike in a while. The 20 minutes of tempo felt super easy after the 30/30s

6.7 hours in rain. Also super strong winds in the wrong direction out on Highway 1. And gusts that required me to have 2 to 3 feet to either side. Next time I should check the wind forecast!
102 miles, 10,000 feet. Had 3 bottles of Infinite on the ride (300 Cal each), a personal pizza, a scone, and a Starbucks Coffee beverage. Got home, drank a protein shake, ate a bowl of cereal, and ate 3 slices of toast while my wife made dinner. Still starving!

Mmm. Steak, baked radishes, and sweet potatoes with goat cheese. Appetite satisfied for at least an hour.

slower stuff (running, backcountry or nordic skiing) generates heat with less place for it to go/less airflow, so cold conditions can actually feel warmer than biking in 40f (shocking).
but....at a certain point, like true -19f, the bigger issue is extremely cold air going into your lungs.
skiing in cold temps just feels more right than biking....but folks out here snow bike crazy amounts in sub-zero temps.

my mistake, -19 is more like 3 am temp. during day time, it's more like -5 F.
running it is i suppose. don't know why i thought there would be anything else. wishful thinking perhaps. i don't really like running

This is the last week of Base 1, next is base rest week and my wife is convinced her ftp is higher than we think. I really don't know because all I have is a file from August showing she did 183w for the latter 20 mins of a 30 min TT and Golden Cheetah checking out all rides from last year agreeing. She'd never ridden a bike competitively before last year and didn't get dropped in a real race (happened in a training crit once when she moved from c->b). With a ftp that low her Z2 tops out at 133w and she's like "that's it?". Not even sweating. It seems like either I'm totally dead wrong or she's been riding tempo for like every.single.ride ever. Clearly we needed help last year. At least we have a plan now.
I'm making her do an indoor TT tonight. Right to not let her see power?

1:45 on cross bikes just before the snow. Jan 23 is about the latest we've been able to ride cross on the trails, but I think this is it.
This:
Plus this:
Equals some horrible wind chill index. On the straightaway road home I was leaning sideways into the wind so hard that when a car passed, momentarily blocking the wind, I almost fell over. I had to leave my helmet on for 10 minutes after we got back because I had no use of my thumbs.

I, uh, rode inside.
2 hours. Mad suffering. Day off tomorrow. Three more days of this block, then vacation.
Went to our favorite all you can eat sushi place last night. Ate way too much, so I'm a bit fat today.

16" in the last 24hrs, more on the way. I won't be riding outside any time soon. I'll have 15hrs for the week, all on the trainer.
On another note, it's amazing how much work your body does when shoveling snow. I was outside for two hours in a light coat, warm up pants, baseball cap and winter gloves, breaking a sweat in 15 degree temps. I'm going to be sore tomorrow. Haven't used some of those muscles in a hot minute.

Just under four hours Z2, to beat the snow and close out a rest week. Which might sound wrong, but my training load is still building slowly. This next block should be a lot more work.
Funny thing about these rides is not being that tired, but being SO HUNGRY. In excess of 2,000 Calories burned, so I get it, but it's funny.

Yeah, fwiw it helps to eat a lot while on your ride, it means less having to stuff your face when you get home to prep for the next day. I eat like half a pb&nutella sandwich every 35min-40 minutes depending on ride length.

team ride (ride grolby did) was WAY too early for me (7am on a saturday? hah!), and to be honest it was a bit too cold for me today. so I slept in and hit the rollers. 2.5 hours with a 3*20' set. rest week legs meant i could push pretty hard. pretty happy with how training is going so far this year...definitely better than last year. v02 work starts tuesday. weighed in ~10lbs lighter than at thanksgiving today. seem to have figured out how to slowly lose weight without just starving myself, which I've always struggled with. hopefully i can hold this dedication through busy season at work (basically now through mid april). that being said, once I get into grad school i'll be kind of cruising at work.

did a 2x8min ftp test on trainerroad, haven't ridden that hard in a while. unfortunately ftp not really any different, but on the plus side I haven't done a ton of riding lately, so good that I haven't really lost it yet.
