I mostly agree with that, but some days you just don't have it mentally, or your legs give up when you aren't expecting it.
Yet another standard issue ride forever day. This is going to be a cold one...

As my coach says, if you can do the 12min of the FTP test, you can finish the 20. His view is that if you're going to blow up, it'll be within the first 5-8min. And once you've made 18min, you can absolutely finish the last 2...it's just going to be very mentally tough.
Last test I did, I wanted to quit pretty much every 5 seconds starting at 12min.

Seriously don't actually know WTF I'm going to do. I want to crush the end of this block with a nice four hour cruise, but it looks like I'll be doing whatever I end up doing Sunday on rollers, not outside. Need to protect my delicate extremities and whatnot.

That's why I'm doing all the volume during the week, I'll only have to ride a couple of hours sat and sun to hit prescribed load. 26 sucks but it's survivable, unlike 14...

Note to self. Do not post about quitting on a test or effort.

Sometimes the spirit is willing, but the flesh tells the spirit to FOAD. I think we've all been there. I sure have.

What about quitting an entire ride before starting? I was gonna do 3.5 hours this morning, but slept in. It feels sooooo good to get enough sleep for once, I decided I need an extra rest day.

an hour of intervals equaling one of my best two or three indoor hours. now a couple of days off for college auditions.

Yeah, we did a four hour team ride last year at about that temperature and we lived but it was ridiculous. We're talking two pairs of tights ridiculous. And it was still freezing. On the plus side, we were on the Cape right after the first big snow fall of that winter and it was beautiful. But I'm not in a big hurry to replicate the experience. 26, I would be willing to deal with. Though I would still complain strenuously.

blue ribbon day
Not only did I not quit, but my 30' at 94% was a 31' at 96% . The VO2 max intervals before and after (1 each) were on target.

I don't want to pile on, but I've never quit a test effort. If you have to take 5 seconds to breath and then grind it out, that's part of the results to me. Part of me says 18 minutes of hard work wasted, the other part says that taking like 94% of 18 minutes is pretty close to 20.

Semi-quit: Planned to do 2x30' at 90%. 5 minutes into the second one I had to back down. I'm racing on Saturday and I don't think I gain anything by overfatiguing myself two days before. I'll take tomorrow as a super mellow Z1 commute plus a few openers.

totally agree. I organized a 160 mile 5kft ride in November last year, 25 folks registered and eventually 2 showed up and one quit so i ended up just I and another friend. Turned out to be an awesome 9 hr ride That friend is now riding in colombia for a team and i'm back commuting to work

I've started a 20' test and in the first 3 minutes decided I didn't have it and dropped into a to 2x20' at FTP workout (my test day is usually 20' test followed by 20' low end of SS).
Tested yesterday and all the hard work of the winter has my FTP up 2.5% since November (also up ~2.5% from this time last year). Am I stupid for being ecstatic with that result? Measurement error in a PT is what 2%ish?

Group ride and some solo climbing. Went farther than planned and ended up with 65 miles and late for work so now I'm working through my lunch break
Bummed that I lost my favorite sunglasses in the dark part of the ride. I checked they were in my helmet at a light and when we got to the regroup 30 minutes later, they were gone. I should have known better because they don't stay on my helmet very well but they are blue and matched my socks today so you know...

2x20 sst last night. Higher wattage than my last 2x20 set (did these last night based on new ftp), yet my heart rate was lower in both intervals.
Works for me

I think im going to shorten the rest interval some..10 minutes almost feels like too much.

I thought the standard rest period was five minutes. Ten would seem too long for me too.
