I rolled up the hill and raced the Beat the Clock TT on Saturday morning on exactly 2 hours of sleep. Time was a good minute slower than when I raced it in April. FML.

The sleep deprivation was weird. It didn't hurt to race, I just couldn't turn the cranks like I wanted. Even at the end of the race I felt sleepy and all day I had full-body muscle weakness. Also I'm back to being fat as ****. Cry.
@scheibo had an excellent merckx time.

I used to have a theory that guys got faster after they had kids. This was based solely on observations of several friends who had kids then suddenly raced a lot faster. In several cases, it was their second kid. Of course, in all those cases, they only had one newborn to deal with.

But I'm sure it will all settle down for you soon.

I don't have kids myself, but I would venture to say that you're probably right, but not because of lack of sleep. The limited amount of time they have to train simple becomes hyper focused and they leave behind a lot of others who are doing fast group rides and long endurance rides but including a lot of garbage miles in the process.

Or so I've read on the internet.

They f*** you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were f***ed up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Well, took last week super easy - only 2 hrs total. Drove up to the hill country for the weekend with the girlfriend and did a bunch of hiking.

Got back this afternoon and did 1:45 on the trainer, including a 20' test @ 221W - a new recent record for me. I'm hoping for another 3-4 week 8-9 hr/wk training block. CTL @ 45; TSB @ -5.

I put in some good miles over the holiday weekend. Group ride Saturday, gravel ride with a lot of climbing Sunday and some solo riding yesterday and today. Heading off on vacation tomorrow so I wanted to get some miles in but avoided the big group ride today for safety reasons!

spent the long weekend at my parents, took my wife out on a couple of rides sans kid, she did 20 miles on Sat and about 9 on Sunday, I averaged under 100 watts and under 100bpm on both, which is hard for me to do on the road bike

today was all kinds of fail for training, started a 20min test, thought I could get away with it in the basement, too hot, stopped 9 mins into the interval, foolishly tried to start another one in my A/C dining room, but decided to bail in my 5 min hard effort warm-up, then did about 30 mins of mediocre z2/z3 but bothered by my saddle. In all, I spent maybe 2hrs and 100TSS, but I feel unfulfilled lol

well...it still winds up being an arms race. some folks will bring an aero frame, aero road bars, deep front, disc rear, skinsuit, ... hell, some people might even have an adjusted position on the road bike.

it just totally backfires.

it also then penalizes the people that have the gear--1 less chance to use the toys.

i get the mercx thing in, say, cat 5 or 4, but when you get to p12 the limitation is silly, IMO. if you don't have that toy, maybe you stage hunt and don't contest the TT. in fact, conserving in the TT maybe makes a stage win more likely.
I have often thought in stage races it should be a one bike rule. Can't fight the multiple wheels, but one bike would work.
But yea - this is about toys.

I hear that. That's why I don't run. There aren't enough toys to buy.

Recovery from the crash is going well; felt great yesterday, but sprinting for more than 5 seconds or so was just about impossible. Odd sensation; the legs just give out completely, whereas I can usually push longer, but with less power.

Did the local hammer ride this afternoon, felt good. Won some sprints, but micro-recovery (as in just after the sprint) was slower than usual.

Two crits this weekend!

Also got a well-time flat at the end of the ride; been a while.. actually a good feeling to fix it and ride on!

But I'm glad they're a pretty rare occurrence for me.

MattM, I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. I've been up and down. I got on the bike on Sunday and Monday for easy 1 hour rides on the trainer. Both went well, though I was a bit sore in my hip, and though I would be able to race on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, I did pre-race openers, with plans to race on Wednesday night. I was able to put the power out through my legs, but my shoulder was killing me afterward. It's been noticeably swollen since. I still did an easy hour on the trainer last night - mostly sitting up because I was uncomfortable with my hands on the bar.

Also, it's taken nearly a week for the bruising to start showing up. Normally I see bruising within 24 hours, but not this time. My hip turned black and blue a couple days ago while my elbow and shoulder just went yellow. I look jaundiced.

I won't be racing this Saturday - it's not a big loss, I don't really like the course, but I hope everything is healed by a week from now for our State RR championships.

Tell me about it! My ass is not pretty right now (usually it is).

Sounds smart not to race if you're not ready; good luck with the healing!

I don't know if pretty is the word I would have used to describe what was hanging out of the back of your torn kit.

No road rash here thankfully, y'all heal quick.

My coach has looked at my files and we have talked, it has been decided that i'm fine with ftp and vo2 and the weak spot is over under type crap where you bleed glycogen before the real efforts start. So I'm going to be doing a lot of that ****, which sucks because it feels bad.

Yeah I haven't decided what to do yet. Timing is awkward. Chances are good I'll just end up doing openers tomorrow and hoping for the best. Any workout I do will be looking toward Purgatory, not Harvard.

Anybody experience changes in power output when you move the handlebar position? My reach is more or less optimized, but id like to put the bar lower. I dropped it 1 cm recently, and it feels ok. I think there room for more if i so desired. However, I'm wondering if lowering the bars might take away from power and max power

You may have to adapt to the new position by training a lot in it. I make the most power with the lowest RPE in the drops, because I trained hard to make that happen. Ex can verify this.
