    UK Racing License Question

    I'm moving to Edinburgh in the near future. Can I purchase the international license option through USAC or do I buy a British cycling license? It looks like if I want to accumulate points and ranking I need to buy a UK license but looking for confirmation or advice.

    You can purchase a UCI license through USAC. You may wish to keep your domestic USAC license and purchase a UK license.

    I would definitely check out in which category you would be placed with a UCI license. This could mean you are forced to race the highest category, which could be a mismatch of your level.

    Get local, or both if you are going to race outside the UK. An International license means you need to have and present a foreign permission letter every time you race, and you need one for every country you race in. This - is rarely enforced. It may be easier to get a local license. Also rules vary a bit even at the non junior level by country.

    Going from UK to USA - we have a young adult my son rides with that instead of using his UK license or international got a USAC license and he doesn't need to worry about foreign permission letters. They transferred him from UK junior to USA Cat 1 adult, which is about right for local crits, but IME off for our NRC/NCC races.

    FWIW ranking opinion - it matters less in Europe than the USA. Your Cat 2 should get you in the races you want in the UK.Ranking on the continent (I could ask the UK friend about UK) is more associated with the team you are one. The bigger races accept teams and teams in turn riders.

    That's where I'm from. I have no idea about the licence but I hope you love that city as much as I do! :-)

    Thanks all. I ended up buying a UK license, but it's not really clear what cat I'll start in. They have 4/3/2/1/elite and I'm assuming since I just bought the license as a noob I'll be a 4 unless I petition for something different. Interestingly, their rules say that you have to earn a certain number of points just to maintain your category each year, unless you're a 3.

    In the UK, you need a British Cycling racing licence to race under their rules and gain points. One licence will cover all disciplines of riding. You will start in the lowest cat (4) and as you earn points you progress up the ladder- Elite being pro full time riders. I assume this isn't too dissimilar to the US. You may also want to look at getting accredited on an indoor velodrome such as Glasgow as winters can be particularly harsh in Scotland.

    Another governing body is TLI, who place riders in categories according to age. Time Trials are more common in the UK too. Many clubs run an evening TT series on weekdays over the summer months. Distances are usually 10 miles with the occasional 25 & 50 mile races too.

    Roughly speaking, the year divides up like this depending on your aims

    Jan- March: Cylocross/ Indoor Track

    Apr- August- Road Racing/ TT/ Outdoor Track

    Sept- Oct: Hill Climb Time Trials/ Start of CX

    Nov- Jan: CX/ Indoor Track

    Don't be a stranger when you get over there, I'm curious to know what the competition is like; it seems like the sport has blown up in the UK over the past 5 years so it may be pretty cutthroat right now.

    Will do. There are zillions of clubs and it seems to be a packed calendar. Sky winning the tour 3 out of 4 years seems to be like our Lance effect, but they obviously have an even deeper pool of talent. My sense is that the fields will be strong, maybe even California strong.

    While we're pretty concerned with keeping the cats. separate in races, most of the races I've seen over there will just have one big field, basically like a 2/3/4/5 field would be over here. That'll be interesting...
