From a link in the link about the wind I posted above (I don't know how to do these kinds of pastes on the phone yet):

"When you feel a gentle, perpendicular breath into (not across) one ear, just like your girlfriend does when she's playing naughty, then that ear is facing the wind. Therefore you know that's where you want to put something to block the wind, probably another rider.

The confirmation is that there is no girl at the other ear. If both ears are getting something, either you're really lucky or you're not facing one ear to the wind - you're probably looking into the wind, and both ears are getting a piece of it."

All you have to do is sit up and turn your head a bit. Do this on each different direction straight (for your linked race at the beginning of the thread), a couple times per straight as the wind may shift. If something doesn't seem right, if there's wind hitting you, verify it.

You know when you're supposed to be just sitting in? This is when you're mapping out all the wind so you know "Okay, sit slightly left on this bit, then directly behind, then slight left" etc etc. Then when you're doing your moves you're not suddenly poking your head upright to figure out where the wind is coming from.

I forgot, the drafting post was from a group of posts I wrote for some less experienced teammates. The final post of th Series is here:
Sprinter della Casa: Racing - CCAP Tuesday Night Race, May 27, 2014

As always, if you have questions ask.

To borrow a Football phrase. It's not the X's and O's it's the Jimmies and Joes. Late in races decide who's wheel you want to be on. Work on the skill of getting on it and holding it. If you can get good at those two things you will always be in the mix in field sprints.

sometimes we do that on purpose so you have to pull through in the wind. eating off your plate, if you know what I mean.

You could just put a wad of gum on top of your stem with a piece of string hanging out.

It is Cat 5 racing. Winning doesn't matter, but if you do win that is cool. The most important thing is to learn how to ride in a race. Finish 10 of them and don't cause crashes.

Wisdom.

FWIW, I think I'm up to 150 or so "W's". None of them came as a Cat five and only a couple as a 4. See Fudgy.

Winning is overrated. I prefer 3rd to 5th place anyway.
