Platform Rack Recommendations: Yakima vs Thule
Hey guys,
I've been given the option of a new rack for Christmas. I've narrowed it down to the Yakima holdup 1.25 and the Thule 917xtr. Both are platform style, both lock the front wheel, both hold two bikes. My hitch is 1 1/4", so the 2" models are out. Anyone care to throw out their experiences with either of these, or similar models in the 2" version? They are down to he penny the same price, so it really comes down to which one is of "better quality of expected longevity".

I have the Thule and and it's been perfect. I also have the 2 bike add on. Mine is the 2inch model and I've had it for at least 7 years. Everything from 29ers to 20 inchers has been on it without problems. No issues at all and I would get it again.

IMO these are the best racks available in that form factor. They are more expensive.

my 1up ROCKS. every single person that has used it comments on how amazing it is relative to others and how easy it is to use. it's not cheap, but it works really well and is modular. you can start off by getting 2 trays and add more as/if necessary. (they recommend only 3 trays for a smaller hitch and 4 is fine with a full size one.)
highly recommended if you are open to brands other than yakima and thule.

Likewise. The owner of the LBS likes mine so much he borrows it. Every time he says "this is what a bike rack is supposed to be like." Incredibly solid and easy to use. It's not light but it weighs a bit less than the similar Yakima and Thule racks. And the ability to add more platforms is a nice feature.

Thanks for the input. I did see the 1upusa racks, but those and the kuat are a tier out of santa's price rage . I like the way they work over the others though, with the two legs that come over the wheels. I've heard / read of more people owning the Thule vs the Yakima, not to say that either one is superior to the other. It's probably the one I'll end up getting.
