4 crashes in the last lap in my field (40-44 men). At least 2 before that. I managed 23rd of 150 after being boxed in when the break of 6 went with about 1/2 lap to go.
Fun course, though as a light climber type I wished for more elevation. Will be back next year.

Well crap... I go away for a year and miss out on this. I work in downtown Winston in the giant white phallus. I'm heading over to the Crit tomorrow afternoon to watch. It's the Dixie Classic fairground crit course with an add-on. Luckily, they resurfaced it a year or so ago. I haven't raced over there since but hopefully they took care of the metal plates, raised manholes and access panels. If you see a 225 lb bald guy in a blue button down and 3 inch scare on his jaw trundling around, say "hello". I'll be around Saturday for the Pro RR too.
btw- the East Coast ends at the MD/VA line. It ended in Delaware until 2014. It then becomes the Atlantic Coast until you get to FL. (Boston and Syracuse notwithstanding) At FL, it becomes the Gulf Coast - on both sides - just due to overflow and leakage.

I'll keep an eye out for you! I saw a welder out on the crit course doing something with the plates, smoothing them out I assume. I just hope they sweep all the little rocks off the course before we start.

some people did stupid stuff, but unless you were gassed it was pretty easy to steer clear and read where the problems were going to occur. we had like 110 or 115. with full road that was totally casual, though.
the bigger issue was simply that riders who were dropped or overmatched had some recovery time on the back half of the final lap, and a bunch of them decided to sprint for 18th or 35th or 40th. (a) there was a break of 6 up the road that scooped up the entire podium and (b) if you're not in the first, oh, 10 riders in the field sprint, you should just focus on keeping it safe. it's a weird mix of riders giving up/slowing, riders sprinting for 40th, and some guys just staying the course. that shouldn't happen inside the barriers.
the pavement was amazing, and while there were no natural features of note to force a selection, it made for a wide-open course the left many people feeling like they might have a shot on the right day. that meant big registration numbers -- that's a good thing.
my late attacks didn't stick. i fired my bullets well before the finish so just cruised in mid-pack to keep it safe.
while the course didn't naturally suit me, it was a bike racer's course, and i felt the support out there (officials, police, volunteers) were great. why can't we get neutral feeds for these things, though???
we had that 6-man break that finished 30" ahead, then ~50 riders finishing in a pack, then another 50 or so well behind or DNF.

I totally agree with you on the little rocks! Not that there are a ton, but, enough such that a sweep would be nice!

I've raced against #1 and #3 . #4 gave me a double take. No locals anywhere near the top, at least not ones I know.
I see Racer Ex brought home a silver medal in the 110+ tandem. Nice work bud!

And yeah. hope Matt's ok. From the live tweets it sounded like there were a handful of crashes.

Here are a couple of videos from the 45 -49 Crit. There was a crash in the neutral lap and the race was restarted. This is lap I and lap II from the start finish line.
The course is in a parking lot.

45+ is done. Good showing by Elliston (was also top 10 in the RR) but apart from that not a lot of northeast representation at the top. Couple of CDR teammates around 20th/ 30th (CDR would probably shout "21st place is ****!").
