Hotels raided at the Giro

Anyone else here about this? I just read it on the Eurosport live updates form the Giro. Apparently the NAS raided the hotels of Davittamon Lotto and Saunier Duval. They found Alti Trainer 200 units in the Davittamon rooms. I guess a lot of teams use them and they aren't illegal with WADA or UCI but they are illegal in Italy. They also caught doctor Maria Sagasti (Saunier Duval) trying to throw away Glucose drip which may or may not be illegal with WADA and Italian law. Police siezed over 200 products from the rooms of the two teams.

Haven't they learned by now to keep their drug paraphanelia in the team trailer or bus. Sheesh!

Cyclingnews.com:
Team directors to meet over NAS raid

By John Trevorrow in Marostica

Team directors at the Giro d'Italia will have an emergency meeting 45 minutes before the start of today's stage to decide their reaction to yesterday's raid on the race by the Italian drug squad, the NAS.

NAS officers confiscated an Alti-trainer from the Lotto-Davitamon team, a device which lowers the oxygen content of the air around a rider as he sleeps, simulating the effect of sleeping at high altitude, which is known to stimulate an increase in red blood cell production.

"The police searched our hotel and our team bus but there's nothing to worry about," said Davitamon-Lotto directeur sportif Allan Peiper. "The Alti-trainer is something every team uses and it's not illegal under the UCI rules."

"The UCI are backing us because these machines are legal and all the teams use them. It's just a minor Italian law that outlaws the procedure."

For Peiper, the raid was a disappointing way to end the day in which Robbie McEwen took his third victory in this Giro d'Italia. "It's just taken the gloss off a great day yesterday," Peiper told Cyclingnews. "However, all will be revealed today. We're having a team directors' meeting 45 minutes before the start of the stage to decide how we respond to this.

"If we've got a problem so has every other team."

Well, if a rider who is not an Italian "star" gets caught violated some "minor" Italian law against cheating in a pro competition, he may get time in a "minor" Italian prison.

The riders need to start rehearsing their stories now: "I'm not the guy who was using that stuff...it was my "unknown" twin..."

For pot and acid you listen to the Grateful Dead, but what do you listen to while you do performance enhancers?

Which begs the question: Who are the bigger a$$holes, the Italians or the French. I think the latter wins by a handlebar push.

when it come to stupid laws the Italians win going away. They are still hounding the Williams F1 team over Ayrton Senna's death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. They are finally thinking of dropping the investigation after 11 years!

I guess they have lots of time to waste. They certainly don't have to worry about wasting time reading about Italian war heros.

Hardly. Read up on winemaking in France. Yes, winemaking. You want arcane laws, look no farther than France.

You listen to the sweet smell of victory. Or the beeping of an electrocardiograph.

They took freakin' altitude tents. Anybody who seriously races at altitude uses one.

I'll tell you that if I was racing professionally, I be putting together a rider's organization. No riders, no race.

This has to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen....

Altitude tent laws? Strange. I understand banning drugs, but I can buy a freaking altitude tent and put it in my house if I want. They're not illegal to citizens, they shouldn't be illegal for riders.
