How do they race without eyewear???

I continue to marvel at the pros (and others I suppose) who race, much less ride, with no eye protection. Is there a point?

I ask because I just came back from a ride during which at least half a dozen creatures bounced off of my glasses. And a few hit me in the cheek so hard I checked for blood. That is the typical ride during racing season.

I ride without glasses. My eyes eat a couple of bugs a week, at least.

You must have small, soft bugs there. If one of several that hit me today hit you in the eye, you would be blind. No joke.

It hurts a lot a lot, thankfully my eyes have never taken a hit from anything larger than a fly. I couldn't get one out of my eye last night for half an hour, and then almost right after I got that one out another one hit the same eye

Hmmm ... I'll ask the obvious ... why don't you protect your eyes?

Meh, I've survived so far . Everytime I've had the chance to buy glasses I dont want to spend the money. And I like being able to feel the wind in my eyes...it makes up for the occasional bug or two.

I got something in my eye on a ride a few weeks ago, about 45 miles away from my car. Ended up scratching my cornea (corneal abrasion) and had to endure a horrendous ride back to my car, pretty much blinded and massively painful. I now consider glasses as essential as helmet, gloves and shoes.

I got scolded severely for not having eyewear a few months ago. "What if something flies in your eye on a descent and you lose control at 45 mph?" I'm pretty good about it now.

Besides, if you're wearing glasses how are you going to show off your mean face?

In the summer months here in Austin my glasses last about 10 minutes, by that time I'm sweating so bad I can't see out of them. This is starting to concern me as the sun here is pretty intense and I can't be doing my eyes any favors.

Bandana. Problem solved. If I go out without one, I'm blind before mile three.

Well Jacky Durand (now retired and doing commentary on Eurosport) was more refined. He held on to a car.

I don't race and getting crap into my eyes is a major issue.. I see bugs deflected off of my lenses all the time..Better that than your eyeballs.

I have two glass eyeballs so this is not an issue for me.
