Life, The Universe, And Everything
In that context, this is pretty diminutive, but ...
I have seen many records set (Bannister's four minute mile, Beamon's long jump, Fangio's fifth world Formula 1 championship at the age of 45), and some broken (Babe Ruth's home run record, etc.), but today I saw - officially - a record set that I believe will never be broken. Lance Armstrong won his seventh consecutive Tour de France title.
In fact consecutive, as impressive as it is, need not be a part of the point. Seven any way is enough. I am not his biggest fan, but it is clear that besides being a great human interest story, this man has done something beyond any possible expectations. And all the congratulations due him should be forthcoming.
But I believe that he is a person whose particular qualities will likely not appear again for a long, long time, if ever. Certainly not in my lifetime. More power to him. Vive Le Patron!

I agree. I'm glad that he is going out on top. Seven cleared some issues that might have come up if he had not done it, and eight proves nothing. Too many legend wait a little too long to step aside. This is the perfect time for him and the Tour to move along to the next chapter.
