Thinking about going from a 12-25 to a 11-23. Why? I could really use that 11t on big descents becasue I'm kind of a masher as opposed to a pure spinner.

Do any of you guys get "stuck" on big climbs using a 11-23 (assume using a 53x39 in front , not a compact) and wish you had a 12-25 or 12-27?

I wish Shimano or Campy would simply make a 11-25 gear somehow!

Yes, there are times I wish for a compact 11-23 or 12-27 or even a triple, but I get up the hills. If you are a masher it is a non issue anyway, it took a 15% hill to be my undooing on my TT bike (42-23) so I bet I am good to about 19 - 20% grade level...

No problem!

go to the biggest hill you'll need to get up. stick it in 39/23 and see how you handle it.

It came with the bike, and the bike was used.

FYI I usually run 53/42, 13-26 for training runs. There are no mountains around here, and I like the wider mid-range I get in the 42, and a 42/26 is about the same as 39x25. I know that wouldn't solve your top-end though.

Used to ride 56-45 to a 24-21-18-16-14-12 in mountain RR's. Now, a 39-23 ain't enough for some of the long steep climbs around here. Cool thing about the old six speeds was coming up with customized setups for different courses (31-12).

Now, I just use a DA 10 25-12 stock most of the time. Really would miss that 16 one would lose to make a 25-11. But for long descents... All DA 10's I know of have a 16t cog.

Had a TT in Wyoming last year with a 30+ mph tail wind on the return. The 11t
was great then.

I run 12/27 on my bike. Used to have 12/25. My right knee is somewhat of a problem. I can descent fast enough.
