Road Race because I am not very skilled yet and not good with explosive power so my crits arent really up to par. And I think I will like TTs but I havent done one yet.

Either a road race that finishes with a big climb, or a very hilly road race, or a crit with a huge hill, or just a mass start hill climb. Basically I like anything with enough climbing to drop all of the sprinters.

Road race 'cause there're fewer crashes and it takes too long to heal these days.

Crit, Especially like fast tight downhill turns. I tend to fall asleep in Road Races, but I reserve my greatest dislike for TT's.

I'll second that!

Got a crit coming up this Saturday and I haven't raced for a couple of years. It's probably not the best race to start with but I'm familar with the circuit. All I can do now is hope that the last 6 months of training has been worth it.

The Race Across AMerica. Even on the TdF the riders spend a lot more time sitting down then racing. I just miss seeing the promotional caravan that goes with the TdF. I am looking forward to seeing Johnathan Boyer up against Tinker Juarez in this years' RAAM.

Cyclocross is my favourite. Then I like crits. I like the crits best because it's balls to the wall like cyclocross is. RR's get boring in my cat because they are too short and everyone waits around for the sprint. I also hate the yellow line rule and cars approaching the other way. I like to know the road is wide open as in a crit.

TT all the way. Give me hills too. A hilly TT or RRis great to neutralize my sprinting weakness. So why do I race so many crits?

How long are your RR's? Aren't there hills to cause some selection? Around here the crits are the races ending in pack finishes and the RR's are the ones where a small group can manage to break away.

ITTs or stage races (time based) that include a ITT and or road race finish at the top of a climb.
The older I get the less crits I do it seems. A few years ago I would have said criterium strait away, not so anymore.

Criterium around the Capitol in Madison,WI. 1km perfectly square course. One leg, a fairly steep climb, next leg, flat, next leg slightly downhill, final leg steeper downhill with final fastest corner off camber, going into the climb.

Great course because a fairly strong, smart rider can solo and lap the pack in nothing flat. At that point, its usually over as far as first place goes.

Been quite a while since I've been to Madison, but I'm sure its still got to be held on occassion. As far as I know, its not part of Superweek. Check with www.yellowjersey.org.

Crits by far! The more turns the better. My favorite has got to be our previous UCSB crit-course around the dorms. About 1.2 miles with 13-corners (1 U-turn)! And one year we did it in the rain!!! Oh yeah!!!

Not Famous Footwear maybe? My GF did it years ago when we lived in Minnesota. It was apparently clear for her race, but rained on the Mens 3s, and everyone came back with scabs and scars.

btw, my favorite race is the Madison, but it has nothing to do with Wisconsin or cheese. I responded in the other thread but that one seems to have dropped down the list. On the road I suppose crits would be my favorite.

If we are talking specific courses then I'd have to say Downers Grove or maby "The Brick" in Athens. Both challenging to race on, but more for the atmosphere and crazy crowds.

As an example I just did a race last sunday in Charlottesville Virginia. It was 40 miles with some pretty nice rollers in it. But nothing that will seperate climbers and sprinter types. There was also a nasty head wind. Every break was instantly chased down and because of the course and wind conditions it was impossible to break away. I live in the mountains of VA and really wish there was a good racing sceen here because it's perfect. There is one cat 4 road race in NC that has a signifagant mountain finish but even that race is only 30 miles. Most of the races are in whats called the Piedmont or the Coastal Plain. The coastal plain is dead flat and the piedmont is basically the foothills of the Appalachains.

Crits... a chess match at 25-30mph into 90* turns what's not to like? You have to be mentally sharp the whole time or you're screwed, not to mention powerful if you want to contend, but it's all about smarts. I think that's the thing I like most about crits is the mental aspect. I've never done a TT, but racing the clock to me isn't as fun as racing someone less than 6" away from you. RR are ok, but I prefer the high speed stakes of a crit.
