PIR 05/02 - Race Report

Woke up today and my RHR was 48; lower than it's been in months. Still, I'm sluggish and congested and think I'm overtrained. I race anyways. In the wind. By myself. Spit out the back on the second lap, I struggled to keep up. I passed a couple folks asking them for help to battle the wind. These guys were toast and would not work. Well, I'm going then. As fast as I can in fact. I made to the finish without them. I did not want to quit. Not now.

Dabbo and Fishmel finished with the pack a quarter mile ahead of me. I think Fishmel might have gotten a Top Ten. Way! To! Go! This was Dabbo's second race out here and he's doin' great. It seems like the field is not as twitchy as it was two weeks ago. Still is kinda freaky, the lines some of these folks take around the corners.

I left my Garmin at home. I think I left my legs there too.

Stats (approx): 12 miles; 32 min or so?

Did you have a problem with bringing your heartrate up at all during hard efforts? I had that a couple months ago, and stopped a workout as I was sucking wind, but my heartrate would not climb much at all (at least to where it should've been for that particular effort I was doing). I ended up stopping my interval workouts for a week and a half and taking 4 days off in a row several days later. I had overextended myself a bit, and really needed to recuperate. I came back stronger and felt great on the bike afterwards.

Thanks for letting me know GuitarWiz. That advice helps especially tonight 'cuz I didn't have my HR monitor with me. I'm taking off for 10 days this weekend to go to Florida and North Carolina. Maybe the rest is all I need. I'll probably hit the gym two or three times a week to maintain some semblence of fitness.

On that note, at the TT last Sunday, my HR was all over the place. It wasn't smooth like the week before. Hmmm.

Heavy headwind on the back side tonight, nice tailwind on the big straightaway. Final sprint got up over 34mph. Had a hotspot for points on lap four and thought I had dusted myself making a solo breakway about 3/4 mile before the spot, as usual got blown away by four horses and stopped up short realizing I would not get any extra points. Recovered for the next two laps and gave it my all for the final sprint. There are some d*nm good and strong sprinters out at PIR, men and women.

Pedalmasher I heard you destroyed them on Monday night. You still doing the RACC on Saturday?

Good job man! I'm sure Tuesday competition is waaaaay tougher than Monday - although there are some horses in the Monday 4/5's. I raced the novice masters Monday so I'm not all that. I'm probably gonna move up to 4/5 Monday and Tuesdays and will probably make it down next Tuesday. I think I'm ready - the guys I'm doing the RACC with on Sat are animals. I'll PM you the details.

Nice to meet you guys and have sombody to talk to, tonight was fun, still I could not manage to sprint since I had spent most of my energy, but feeling less tired than 3 weeks ago.
Thanks for the compliment Bigsky, you will see with a bit of rest you will be back in the mix, I would have been dead after a TT of one hour, same as after a century.....
See you guys next Tuesday and if you come to ride Mt. Tabor give me a shout or stop by.
Ciao
Paolo

yeah, be careful with the overtraining. spring time is when people start feeling good and perhaps train harder than they should. i did this last year and burned myself out by July.
