Anyone know how the bookies figure these numbers out?

CCFISH81 05-04-06 08:38 PM

Bookies set up the odds to even the money. As long as winning and losing bets equal out, they win. So the odds are set (and change as bets go down) not based upon some superior knowledge of who will win, rather based upon how people will bet.

OK so how can a guy in the States place a bet?

Snicklefritz 05-05-06 09:37 AM

I wonder what odds would have been put on Armstrong back in 1999

Perhaps not as long as you might think. He'd finished 4th in the Vuelta in the previous year, and there was some talk that he had a legitimate shot at the TDF. I would guess in the 50-1 range.

50 to 1  Imagine the payout some people got!!!

As for me, I've always considered over 25 or 30 to 1 to be a long shot in my book so 50 to 1 is pretty long IMO. I really wouldn't put money on a 50 to 1. Well maybe a few bucks just in case but definately no serious bets unless I know something no one else does. :D

but the odds are different right now. Still looks like Basso for both.

but you know what they say about book making, upon entering , you may already be a loser.

hey I like Danielson at 26 to 1 to win the Giro. Stranger things have happened. Hey $300 on Danielson to win and you could be riding a cat's ass CF bike with Record, and Lightweights.

Floyd at 19 to 1 for the Giro looks a little shaky given he's not entered.

I'm in for US$1000 on Landis.

It appears you cannot register on betandwin.com if you are from the united states... I went to register, and in the list of countries they have United States Virgin Islands and United States Minor Outlying Islands as choices, but not USA... what gives??

You'll need to wait until the TDF is closer for the big online sportsbooks like Sports.com and Sportsbook.com to pick up the lines.

I know in South Carolina, betting over the internet is illegal, covered under the statute regarding placing bets over the phone.
