Info on the Greenbelt Training Series

OK, I know I asked this question on another thread, but I wanted to use a more attention-grabbing title.

Being a complete noob to road bike racing, what kind of crowd shows up for the C category at the Greenbelt Training series? I saw the Cat5/Women/Juniors description and I don't want to be accused of sandbagging... For a 30-minute effort I could probably average 20-22mph. Will I be outclassed?

I know this horse has been beaten in countless "how fast do I need to be to race Cat5" threads, but I got the sense from a U of Md. racer I met on the road that the C class at Greenbelt is pretty pathetic, so I want to see what others think.

Well you've got no choice but to ride Cs right?

Might as well try it - and hey - if you're that much faster than everyone, win it, and ride Bs when you upgrade

just do the Cs. If you totally dominate, do B's next time. thats why they're a TRAINING series. besides, theres more to bike racing than just being the strongest, you need to learn pack skills and handling. Its a pretty safe course with only one turn thats 90 degrees and wide, you should be fine for a first race.

Well, I raced last night in the C's and had a blast. Got dropped by the peloton when I got stuck behind a slower rider on the climb and didn't have room to get around him. Finished 22nd of 38, and won a sprint at the finish with a guy I'd been back and forth with for a few laps. All in all, I had a blast, and will probably be back again. I'm more in it for the training anyway, so winning isn't a huge deal.

PM me if you're going next week. I've never raced a crit (or anything else) before, but may give it a go.
