That guy's head slammed HARD on that pavement, I don't think he's getting back up...
Was the guy at the beginning of the clip trying to sneak into the race?

Hi,
I always find it interesting how US amateurs mange to have horrific crashes while sprinting for lesser postitions. The last race that I rode a couple of weeks ago, there was a crash in the middle of the Masters 40+ pack during the sprint. The rider that started the melee was probably sprinting for 20th place.
Crashes are never good.

Two observations:
1. Note how several of the front-runners glance back at the wreck. Never look back when you hear crashing behind you!
2. Watch the right side of the front of the group. A bike flies forward of the crash and smacks a guy right in the face, taking him down, about 25' in front of where the crash began!
Now....all you Cat. 5 guys desperate to upgrade to avoid the carnage, note this was a Cat. 3 event. Like Greg LeMond says: "It doesn't get any safer, you just crash faster!"

I disagree about the safety thing, though. As riders learn more about traffic, stupid blunders are less likely. There's always the risk, and yes people get bolder as they get faster, but you're less likely to have a freak accident from someone who gets scared of the guy creeping out of his line in a corner, or something like that. Also, notice how the guys who fell exercised good falling reflexes (rolling) instead of throwing their hands out to get broken? Watching this video in slow motion was a great learning aid!

That race was my first road race ever (cat 5 obviously), I left right before the cat 3s. That looked nasty though.
