So Savoldelli decides to descend from the mountain yesterday by bike, instead of by car. But screw the UCI, he's too cool to wear a helmet, and he's not racing.

One spectator, 15 stitch head gash later, Salvo's out of the TDF.

These are professionals, ...right?

There are a thousand ways to get hurt. A friend of mine recently broke her foot getting out of bed. Ya can't beat fate. But, maybe she should have been wearing ski boots or something.

Are you saying that Savoldelli wasn't wearing a helmet?

Um I was under the impression the stiches are on his arm... How would a helmet have helped there?

In local news a cyclist (?) was killed this morning in an accident here locally. When I first heard about it I quickly assumed he was hit by a car but in fact at 5:20am he was attempting to ride over a 3' retaining wall and face planted on the road, no helmet and he is dead. But would it really have been better if he lived? What did Darwin say about natural selection?

Wait a minute...did this mishap occur while Salvo was in the race?

Aren't they all required to wear brain buckets now?

I bet Basso and Ullie put some ball bats to his dome "off the record" for tuneup purposes.

The crowds are so intense on these mountains, that it is often faster for the riders to get back down to the hotels or buses by bike. Savoldelli hit a spectator on the way back to the hotel and cut his head. Dumb way to end a TDF.
Because he wasn't racing, he didn't need to have a helmet on.

This is exactly why we need helmet laws.

Damn PMU hands!!!

Paolo lined up, but abandoned early in today's stage. I'm sure Popo is sending him flowers tonight....

C'mon, it was a cut, Paolo. Talk to Thor Hushovd or Stuart O'Grady, suck it up, and get back out there for your teammates. What a wuss.

We need helmet laws so riders won't get hurt and have to drop out of the Tour De France? That's a stretch, don't ya think?

Call Europe and see if they can change the laws for you.

If he faceplanted, it was probably more than just a cut.

It wouldn't matter. It's the same as a Trek anyway.

We need helmet laws because people can't use common sense. Actually, Ontario has helmet laws, but they are not enforced.

An unenforced law is merely a suggestion.

I thought this thread was going to be about Voeckler's attack in stage 11. That was truly stupid.

Yes. Hard to believe riders did 80 km/hr descents without any protection except wool shorts.

Anti-helmet advocates usually chage their mind after they see someone killed or smack their heads open.

Gary Busey was a really good example of this, he spent years fighting California helmet laws until he fell of his Hog while parking it and ended up in a coma for months. Now, he's a helmet advocate.

Busey needs a blood transfusion more than he needs a helmet. Falco just had a real weird thing happen to him. Helmet may have helped but I doubt it. I agree with Doc.....usually it is too late before the value of a helmet is realized by those who have air between the ears.

for the record, the cut was above his eye. He had to pull out because his eye was stinging so bad that he had to keep it closed...thus no depth perception. Also, he was injured while riding down AFTER the stage. A great majority of the riders tend to ride down after mountain stages because the roads are so packed with team cars trying to leave that it takes the cars a long time to get back to the hotel.
