What an ass. You know exactly what happened--Mr. Cop decides he's gonna be the tough guy and call his buddies to stick it to this guy who yelled at him, and was too dumb to realize that he was in the wrong all along.

I wonder what the police officer's comment would have been had he been reached for comment.

True, but Mr. Pace Car driver could have said something like, "Excuse me sir but there are a bunch of bicycle racers headed your way and it would be safer for you not to be in the street." Then there proabably would have been no distruption of the race. In that case it truly would have been an ounce of prevention..........

Very true. Just my cops-abusing-power bias showing through.

An an officer who handles special events such as these, sometimes the event holders think they are more important than the day to day living. Also, sometimes they don't tell the local authorities about events so they can be properly escorted. "What part of get out of the way don't you understand" is sure a great way to win friends. As far as a reaction, I think the officer did a good job of not starting a confrontation by walking into the station and having another officer deal with it. Believe it or not, but not all cops are out to screw everyone. We put our pants on one leg at a time just like you.

Far be it from me to ever take the side of a "bow down before me" cop (please excuse the redundancy) but it does sound like the driver was being a little bit of an ass too.

Well, I'm guessing they had the proper permits since I assume the streets were shut down.

Again, what an ass.

Umm no he went to police station got his cruiser, went out and gave a tiket himself. Could the pace car could have hadled better? Probably, but cop was 100% in the wrong. Sine this was 1/2/3 category the front was clipping along at 30+ so the car was probably going same or faster, yet he just walked infront of. By the way where the hell were the marshals?

i almost slammed into the back of a police car during a circuit race once. the police car drove onto the track and just stopped in front of the start\finish line to talk to the race organizer. i'm coming through at around 27-28mph and just grabbed the brakes, skidded, but luckly missed him by a few feet. i never did figure out what the hell that was about. luckly no body slammed into me from behind.

Local Barney Fife uses the badge as his personal therapy session. Of course the pace car didn't get a ticket. The local yokle cop embarassed the office. Probably got a good scolding.

Their local Barney's in Williamsport must be of little league caliber.

Police officers are a group like any other . There are many great ones, and a few jerks. This doofus was of the second category. Keep in mind that police officers are like cyclists in that people tend to remember the few jerks, not the good majority. I won't defend this guy though, he was just abusing his authority, IMO.

Right. The guy driving the pace car should just spit that out while going 30 mph at the head of a 1/2/3 race.

Williamsport PA? For sure the cop was an ass. You can NOT tell me that this annual race didn't have permits form the city and that the police were not informed. I amguessing some of the police were on duty for the race. This sop was being an ass and I am guessing thinks cyclists in spandex are f@gs. This fair hamlet (dripping with sarcasm) is in the sticks here in PA...case of the hillbilly cop.

Sorry rant over. Yes there are good cops and bad...this was a bad cop.

As with anything, it's always the bad ones that stick out in people's minds. I grew up in Cincinnati, OH, where the police were well-known for their abuses, small and large. Driving down a 35mph road at 70 with no lights/sirens, for instance, or turning on said lights/sirens just to get through traffic, then turning them off... it was a pretty common occurrence.

Granted, the pace car driver was an ass, but rather than letting it drop this guy decided he was going to use the law as his personal retaliation instrument without thinking.

Like it or not, we depend on the local police for our races. Get on their bad side, and see how likely you are to get a permit for next year's race, and what rate they'll charge the organizer for police support. So while, I agree it appears the officer was at 98% of the problem, we have to find a way to play nice if we want to keep racing.
