Crit report 7.
Bike Store Boy was back so that means no mater what place I come in it will be one place less because he is there. Just sayin.
We line up. The class 5s are 15 strong today and there is Bike Store Boy to take the win and who I think is Block Boy but I find out later he is a brick look alike with more power than a D 8 excavator. He comes in 2nd and later I find he has been racing MTN bikes for a while.
Today I am all about doing a little pulling and staying in the top third of the pack.
Were off: The pace is really easy for the first lap; just everyone going around having a chat. Bike Store Boy picks it up and I’m on his tail. He kicks it up and now the pace is high. Lap 3 and I start to pull. I push it up a notch and get down into the corners and take them as fast as I can. I’m in front so I can spiral the corner and really have-at-her. Others pass as I exhaust and I find a gap and fall into the pace line about 6 back. The pace says fast with 4 or so riders taking over the pulling and we are all ready passing the girls.
This is lap 6 and the prime is coming soon. What’s this, the pace is slowing? That’s good because I was really tired and found myself again in the back of the pack. I pass a bunch and duck into the 6th spot again.
Now there is a bunch of yelling from behind. The girls are passing us. 3 girls on a break are yelling to make room as they pass us. Screw that, the boys all thought collectively and the easy lap was over. A couple more of the fast laps.
The prime was on and again the group slowed up. This race is kinda out of wack, slowing on a prime lap and on again off again speed wise. There is a bunch up as we slow and then a sprint for the prime with Bike Store Boy taking it and Bick Boy right there with him.
The pace is kind of easy and I find myself fully recovered thinking that we are going to be into one mass sprint because, unlike last week, we will all have fresh legs and not be spread out. I start working on getting into a good position.
I pass easily on the corners and the group breaks into 2 pace lines side by side. I'm on the inside right behind Bike Store Boy who is pulling in front. Others beside me. We do a whole lap like this with the pace speeding up and slowing down again with 2 laps to go. Bike store boy is looking over his shoulder for me to pull. I don’t think so. He always wins. I’m sure as hell not going to pull him around.
Last lap: Still everyone is slow. Being on the inside I feel boxed in and decide to escape if possible. A gap opens and I get into the outside on the last lap but have lost about 3 positions. The group is 3 and 4 wide into the last turn. The pace is still slow. Everyone awaiting the sprint. All have caught their breath, fresh legs for everybody. The tension is high.
I select a gear and blast off with 6 or so others doing the same at the same instant. There are 7 in front not that I can count because I’m sprinting hard and can’t do both at the same time. The guy in front of me is number 2 in the standings. A good lead out, I figure. We pass a guy he was drafting. I’m still right on his tail. 4 in front of him. I can place in the top 5 I’m thinking and just have to try to pass Number Two in Standings guy. The line is coming and I dart out from his draft and strain hard. He hears my grunting and straining and try’s to fend me off. I’m coming up on him and up on him and I’m almost beside him. Two peddle strokes left….. Beside him.
I shoot my bike forward at the line for an easy 6 inch win (for 5th) but noooo…he shoots his bike at the same time and takes it.
Wait a minuet. I almost beat the 2nd place in the standings guy and this is my 7th race ever. And I could be his father. Just sayin.
He says sorry to me afterwards.
