Minimum hours for a rider wanting to race well and of average ability, would be 8-10 hours per week. Even racing P12's on the local level should not need more than 12 hours. Head out nationally and that will need to jump up a bit, but the avg local rider can get all they need out of the magical 12 hour mark and still have time for life.

I am a cat1 and find I ride just about as well averaging 12 hours as I do on 25 hours. Just need to keep it consistent.
And structured.

45-50 MPH sprints? Gotta love those downhill finishes.

Actually, I am against structure, as it inhibits feel. Learning comes through free-flow experience. My idea of structure is knowing what groups I am training with that week and what days I am resting. The actual specifics of it are not as important. All training aspects are covered with a fast group or race. Do that a few times a week and maybe a add a couple of moderate paced rides and you'll have the bases covered.

Downhill w tailwind! Agree with YMCA to the extent that most "racers" dont race enough. You can get thru most of a season w/o "training" much if you take advantage of mid-week training races or midweek Velo racing.

Heh, heh... the cat-1 guys I know, like Adam Laurent, Trevor Thorpe and Marc Guerrin, etc. can pretty much hit 40-43mph in a sprint by themselves (even scrawny Eric Cech could hit 38-40mph). Add a lead-out and 45mph+ is easy. Every single 1/2/pro race I've ever finished had a 40mph+ sprint. Must be a west-coast thing...
