need some bike training advice

I’ve been on a road bike for about one year now and want to start racing. The big problem I have is while I do spend a decent amount of time on my road bike (I usually ride 4-5 times a week) I feel like I’m wasting that time... well not wasting but I feel like I could get more out of each ride if I had some sort of goal for each ride. Being someone new to the sport I don’t know what kind of goals I should set to improve my overall riding ability. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.
