^wow, smooth! Thanks, WR! Thats what I want to hear. Did you also start <3' intervals about the same time?
Just for background last year, as a new rider and racer, I did just a handful of Vo2 work because the advice I got told me to stay away from it in your first season. So, I dropped Vo2 work for threshold, though I did do occasional sets of <3' min intervals and some sprints here and there. I think the threshold has paid off. Now I'm really excited to put a sharp edge on my attacks.
^^^^nice work sub! funny, I noticed a huge bump in my PE strength after a week "vacation" from the bike. Recovery weeks work, though I know yours was a bit more serious form of recovery.

My FTP and V02 numbers are improving. Now if I had 1/100th of WR's sprint strength I could feel more confident in these races coming up (5 Road, 1 Crit) in the next few weeks.

Making a kilometer blurry
It worked out that the testing I did the week of the race, my 5' power was 5.9 W/kg and 1' power was 10 W/kg, so I timed it right.
Of course, I'm a sample size of one. You'll have to feel it out from training peak to training peak.

Crikey, I'm only just approaching base standard let alone peak!

Did a nice little morning ride with some openers for this weekend's races. Two long road races and a crit. Legs felt really good; I was worried because I felt like crap yesterday but I think two super easy days were what I needed.

The days I've really done well in races, the days before I felt like major junk. Even doing openers the day before my win in Fort Mill, I felt taxed.

Academic training status:
Organic Chem exam pwned. 97. B1tches!
Cycling Training Status:
On hold. I have to go home for medical stuff again this weekend. I feel like I'm getting more out of my workouts by going mad hard when I go out for 2-3 hrs at a time.

^^gawd, I wish I had time for that three or four days a week. Hey man, good luck with the med stuff. Annoying, but important.
AlexT: I was told that in your first season, push your threshold and learn to race. Second season, mess with "peak" stuff. Made sense. I'll let you know how the second season is going.

So I'm halfway through my ride today and climbing, and all of a sudden I started being able to use my hip flexors to pull on the upstroke. I can't do it for more than 10 minutes at a time, but it makes a huuuuge difference. As I get used to my new position and as I continue to do more gym work, hopefully I can use them all the time.
Today's ride, 2 sets 4X40 seconds. Other than that I was z2. My HR wound up in the middle of my z2, and I avg'd 20.85mph on a decently hilly route.

The first test in O chem is always fun. The most fun test are when the sunthesis rolls around. O chem II is more fun because all it is is synthesis. Like a giant puzzle.

1min power is up a bit to 7.95w/kg still about 30w off peak from last season and I'm still 3lbs over peak weight. Getting there slowly.

295 watts for 32 minutes in my (very) aggressive TT position today. This time last year I was struggling to hold 260 watts in a less extreme position. Adaptation is awesome.

I kinda cheated though. I had to withdraw from the class last year because of my crash, but I've done almost all the material before. I only missed one test and the final. So while I don't remember how everything works, I'm still kinda familiar with it. So I have a bit of an advantage. I would have preferred to have just done it then, but it wasn't happening over the summer. Oh well!
Hopefully the grade will even out my biochem grade from last semester. Now that class was hard as heck!

Now that I have some 'job security' for the school year next year, I think I might go in for another fit if my position doesn't feel right in the next couple of weeks.

Friday 2 hr easy as pie ride, today another easy couple hours with a couple efforts thrown in, tomorrow the first road race of the season here in OBRA land. After this abysmal week of training I am hoping these last two days turn my "dead legs" around for tomorrow. BTW having your office and every other customer's office chocked full of chocolate goodies is in no way fair to those of us that are weak to sugery temptations

Saturday afternoon. LT work with the team.
1. 20 min @ 352 that's 4.62W/kg.
2. 20 min @ 330
It was cool and windy. I think it helped.

Got shelled about 10 miles into my 36 mile race today. It was a collegiate C pack, and apparently a lot of people's first race ever. There was a lot of yoyo going on, and it was on a basically straight road course. It was ridiculous.
After screwing around with all that mess for a while we got to the first real hill, and my HR went through the roof (it was already a lot higher than normal throughout). I made it to the top of the climb a tad off the pace, but not bad, but then blew up and couldn't latch on to the pack that was only about 5 yards ahead.
My max HR was 186, which is about 8 beats higher than I've ever seen before. Just cruising around warming up I was averaging 160, which should be sub-threshold area. I'm not sure why my HR was so jacked up, but it was about 15-20 beats over how I was actually feeling. I should've been fine on that climb, I felt good, but my heart just couldn't keep up I don't think, it doesn't beat that fast.
Oh well, I'm too fat to be a road racer anyway. Tomorrow is the crit, hopefully I'll do better, although I'm scared to ride with those guys if they're as sketchy as they were today. Some of them should have been in D, it was scary. We had a wreck on a straight section about 3 miles in, some guys just got crossed up during a yo-yo and went down.
I also got up at 4, spent the majority of the day driving follow car for other races, and then finally got to race at 3 PM. I was pretty tired, but felt fine.
I'm disappointed, but I guess I just need to train more.
Sorry that turned into a novel, just kinda rambling.

But. Don't let it get the better of you (in the head). Come out always learning something to carry to the next race. Good luck on the crit.
