Yup!

That didn't hurt so bad yesterday, I can totally do it again.

Once next week is over, I can start focusing on diet again. I need to drop 5-8 lbs to get back to where I should be weight wise. I'm over 150 for the first time in months and while I'm getting stronger, I don't think the weight gain is helping.

i would be dangerous if i was under 150 with my power...not that 10lbs would make a huge difference but climbing would help.

While racing last year, I weighed 140-142. I couldn't sprint worth a damn, but I could climb 'easier'. I think I'm stronger now though, both in terms of absolute and w/kg.

I think I can get to 145 again and not suffer any power loss, but I don't think I want to go below that. Last year, if I rode for over an hour, I had to eat something or I'd bonk. This year, with a little more weight, I can manage longer rides without eating, and only getting cals from my drinks. So I'd like to stick to the 145ish weight.

Honestly, if you're losing weight, I'd be quick to stop dieting if you feel like your energy levels and such are going down. There's a tipping point, and it comes pretty suddenly for some people.

Training Status:

To do list:
Pack
Write a paper
Move 2 blocks to a house for the summer (PITA!!!)
Go out to dinner.

What I'm doing instead:

Riding for an hour and a half

no...esummuli talked me out of it...i think i would rather get my feet wet in the 3's with a crit rather than a climbing road race...still don't have the climbing power. my ftp is maybe 265-270 and my 5m is about 325w...that would get me shelled in a cat3 RR i think.

If you averaged 750 for 55s and just coasted the other 5s you would still have 687W for the minute, or 9.5W/kg...

Hour and a half of hills. Did a few Vo2 max efforts repeats on a hill (about 3-4 mins long). I'm going to start doing more of these. They hurt so good.

Calves started cramping a bit today. It's fair considering my body probably hates me given the lack of good nutrition and sleep this week. Hopefully it's not due to the change in fit with the cleats forward...

Also, put on a shorter stem today as I had been instructed to. It felt okay, but my knees were hitting it a bunch. I'll take a longer ride tomorrow and see how it feels but if it isn't feeling good, then I'll just put the old stem on and remove another spacer.

123 TSS for the day.

decided to take a look at it...the average for the 52s pull was 723w, so i was a hair off...both times i looked down i was hovering right at 750...sorry..i am a liar. Good math though

my best to date i think was 621w..

so 8.63W/Kg...so i would guess mine to be around 670ish if i tested again, did you read my post about not being able to complete a 1m test cause i am a wussy?

had i known i was close last night i would have pushed for another 10s or so.

Second peak coming along nicely. Good week of training and happy with where I'm at and where things are going.
- Solid pacing training on the TT bike on Monday
- Tuesday's hammerfest came down to me and 3 cat 2's, set a season best 1 hr pNorm.
- 3x20's today, weren't fantabulous, but met the power goals I had going in. Next week is 2x30's.

CTL back into the mid 120's and climbing steady
7 day TSS ~1100 from now until end of first week of June.

Scrapped the 15 hr/week max I set at the beginning of the year and am back to riding 18-19 hr weeks. Recovery is good and weather is good. I have time to add it in, so add it in I shall.

I'm really glad I decided to do no racing this month. I'm going into June just stoked to get back to racing.

5x5s uphill today. Oofah. I lit the afterburners a bit too much on the first one, so the other four faded more than I would have liked, but I still managed a reasonably consistent set of efforts. More motivation would be nice, but I think that will just have to come with more practice training at this duration. Let's face it, five-minute intervals just suck. I think 2x20s are mentally easier.

On a positive note, in spite of going out too hard, I was pretty damn impressed by how far up the climb I used (Mt. Sugarloaf in So. Deerfield for the locals) I was able to get in five minutes. I was maybe 30-45 seconds from the summit when I stopped the work interval. It's clear, at least I think it is, that 5 minute power is likely a real strength for me. No PT to confirm that, but I had a very good climb. Now I just need my FTP to be higher so I'm not tapping into those VO2 reserves when I would do better to save them...

The climb closest to me that I can grill it on lasts about 4 minutes if I gun it at the base and keep going all the way to the top. Then again, there's a left turn at the top which has a little elevation gain, but I have to stop and make sure there's no traffic before I get up there.

I have a very nice local hill area thanks to the orchards here. Lots between 3-5 mins. I'm probably going to head out there once a week to do some VO2 efforts.

Then if I can amp myself up for it, I might head over to whirlwind hill and do repeats up there. That's another climb that lasts a good 5+ minutes since it's a mile long with some nasty sections. Keeps you honest. It's a few miles away so it's a bit more of a trek, but I'd like to do some VO2-ish efforts up that hill a few times a month.

PS: Good job on the intervals.
I've come to learn from reading on here, and doing 2x20's that as you push your FTP up, pacing and doign Vo2max intervals becomes 'easier'. The only issue, is that you run out of terrain fast. There's only one place I can do a 2x20 workout on the road, and I'm probably just going to have to start looping around there for 3x20s. It's about 7-8 miles one way for the interval. I've already started doing the intervals while sitting up to use less road.

Riding with a lot of my crew this morning in a "cookie ride." I wonder if attacks will ensue? I wonder who will initiate them? I wonder if it's unacceptable to attack your own team on a ride supporting brain cancer?

God is upset with me enough. Maybe I should be good today.

Back on the bike after ~ 1 month.

Gonna hate the bike for a good 4 weeks til my fitness becomes acceptable at the least.

So bummed that this is going to kill my first race season though.

Can't wait to ride today though.

Going to try and get on my new MTB today. It will be the first time I've been on a bike since I wrecked last Saturday. I might also try to get a road ride in afterwards for some fitness.

Yes, it can definitely be hard to find good terrain around here! The hill I chose is really a bit on the steep side for 5x5s, with an average slope of about 10.6%. It's pretty hard to maintain a good spin on that kind of grade unless you're really drilling it. This hill has the principal advantage of being close and having a relatively steady grade (though the second half really kicks up toward 18% or so in places). Other good climbs take more climbing to find, and I didn't have time to go that far yesterday. Just for giggles (because it's not good for much more than that), I plugged the numbers for my fastest interval into Bike Calculator, after using mapmyride to measure distance and altitude at my start and finish points. I gave myself a 100 yard range, since it's hard to be completely certain from a satellite picture where I hit 5 minutes, but I did .75 to .80 miles (9.0-9.6 mph) on a 10.6% average grade. Bike Calculator tells me that such an effort requires 321-344 watts, which for me is 5.6-6.0 W/kg for 5 min. Um, wow. That seems optimistic. I would have to repeat it a few times (what fun!) with better data to have more (okay, ANY) confidence in those numbers, but I don't think the smaller number is totally unbelievable, and it's still very good. If only I had a PT!

Ive been back to solid training now for a little over a month.

After nearly two months off the bike I started back up March 13 but after only 2 weeks I was knocked off the for another week and a half.

Since then though Ive been back on the bike putting in serious training again.

It feels great to be back in the routine and I have a new bike to boot!

Wind over 20 mph today... And I don't even care because I got my PowerTap back!
Going to stop my my 18-year-old nephew's graduation/birthday party after the Giro, then it's on the bike for as long as I feel like it today.
