    2nd earlybird crit race report

Just got back from the 2nd earlybird crit. Participated in the mentoring and then the cat5 race afterwards. The mentoring was informational with Masters Track Champion Larry Nolan guiding us through cornering drills.

after the mentoring session we lined up for the race...race started out pretty mellow and i focused on taking the corners nice and smooth without letting a gap form that required a sprint to catch up. First few laps went without a hitch so i started to move up the pack as i was sitting in the back. Got into the top third and found a comfortable spot to sit in and go with the flow.

There were times the peloton slowed to a crawl, people in the back would take advantage and move up from both sides. I found myself near the back half once again. I started to move my way up the pack once again...heard the cowbell and I had great position with 5 laps to go. The pace picked up a bit...just sat in and tried to stay away fromt he bot-dots. Two laps to go and we got moving...couple of breakaways were attemped but didnt amount to much.

Last lap I was in the top ten, as soon as we began the last lap the speed picked WAY UP. Luckily I was fresh and able to hang on. Powered through the last turn and started to turn it on. Found myself in about 4th place but out in the wind, everyone around me had someone (or a teammate) on there wheel and I was sucking wind. Saw the finish line and hear a whooshing sound from behind me, guy with thighs the size of my waist comes flying by me out of the saddle - I tried to grab his wheel but couldnt hold on and didnt have enough left to get out of the saddle. So I put my nose down and gave what I had...crossed the finish line with 6-7 people in front of me. IM guessing I placed 8-10.

Great race with no crashes, although there was some contact on the last lap but I heard they stayed upright. My positioning was much improved this week and I had a great time. Think I need to work on my sprints...also am wondering if the 80 miles ride the day before had any negative effect on my non-sprint (good excuse anyways)

beutiful day with blue skies and friendly competitors!! Im still trying to figure out if crits are for me...I seem to do a little better in RR.

im very happy with my positioning and also the fact that I didnt get pushed around the peloton as has happened in the past. Kept my elbows out and held my line. Lots of juniors out there which was great to see.

only need a couple more points to upgrade

    baw

p.s. I met another BF poster - great to meet you. Sorry I kept it short as my teammate I was with was in a hurry to get to work. By the way I was curious how you did.

I'm guessing you were in the 35 & under/12:20 race... it was a good one but the pace did slow quite a bit once or twice on the backside of the course. I was just behind and to the right of that little dust-up as we approached the final turn. I get the feeling the people involved slowed WAY down because they just vanished, but I'm glad they didn't kiss pavement.

Otherwise it was a pretty clean race. My computer showed an average of 24mph and a top speed of 33 for my sorry non-existent sprint at the end. Last week's race felt a lot faster. There was a lot of shoulder-bumping but everyone was pretty calm.

I also met that guy who posts here with the white Motobecane Imortal Force, I forget his nick.

yeah I camped on wheels most of the whole race, except when I went with the Tiene Duro break on the backside of the prime lap. really almost crashed when that dude popped out of his pedal and peeled left on the sprint. fun stuff.

contra what bike/kit were you on? I was there in Assos jersey and an old ugly steel bike. I hung with the cool kids for a while but drifted to the back for the last 2 laps. No way I'm risking skin for a practice race.

Ahhh I remember you ContraFixie. I love those nude AL caad8s, I was sucking your wheel er... checking out those curvaceous seatstays many a time while we went round & round. My next bike will be a caad of some kind, I love AL frames.
